BCB holds successful clinic for young fast bowlers

THE Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) last Saturday held another successful coaching session for junior cricketers, this time their fast bowlers being the beneficiaries at the Albion Community Centre cricket ground. A total of 20 young fast bowlers, including Guyana first-class Youth fast bowler Keon Joseph and three females, attended the one-day clinic that was conducted by senior cricket coach Winston Smith who received assistance from Guyana and West Indies ‘A’ fast bowler Brandon Bess.
The day-long clinic saw the players involved in several sessions on fast bowlers’ run-up, bowling rhythms, follow through, importance of length and line and physical fitness among other topics which were well received by the participants.
Apart from Joseph, other participants included Clinton Pestano, Raun Johnson, Shailendra Hardyal, Jamal Jarvis, George Hughes and Nial Smith and the female players Nermala Sewdat, Tremayne Smartt and Erva Giddings.
At the end of the clinic, Smith urged the young fast bowlers to work harder at their games and put into practice what they have learnt and, at the same time, work hard as most of the pitches were unsuitable for their trade and as such they would have to work harder than spinners for success.
Chairman of the BCB’s Special Events Committee, Hilbert Foster, stated that there was a severe shortage of young fast bowlers in the County and the Board was determined to correct the situation.
More coaching sessions will be organised for the fast bowlers while the most promising ones would be selected to be a part of the BCB’s Elite Junior Coaching Programme that would be launched soon.
The final clinic for young cricketers would be held this Saturday at the same venue from 10:00 h, this time the young batsmen will be the beneficiaries.
