Responding to complaints…
CHAIRMAN of Region Two (Pomeroon/Supenaam), Mr. Alli Baksh has told of Golden Fleece, on Essequibo Coast, that Government, through the Regional Administration, is spending millions of dollars under capital works to improve drainage and irrigation facilities, upgrade streets, repair sea defence structures and access to cultivation areas. He was speaking at a roadside face-the-community meeting, Wednesday when he was accompanied by Chairman of Annandale/Riverstown Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC), Mr. Bash Narine.
Baksh said the Government also spends large sums of money, annually, on health care, education delivery and other social services.
Some in his audience had complained that Cullen sea defence embankment is very vulnerable and eroded in several areas.
One housewife, Mrs. Jasmattie Rambarine reported that Atlantic Ocean waves have caused another breach in the earth and sand embankment.
She said she awoke one morning in last week and found her entire yard flooded.
Baksh, however, gave the assurance that work will be done in the Cullen area to shore up the breached section and prevent further flooding.
He cautioned, though, that the sea level is rising every year and people must start thinking of moving to higher ground within the next 15 to 20 years.
Baksh also appealed to them not to cut down vegetation from the shoreline, especially mangroves.
Other issues he addressed included drainage and irrigation for rice fields and complaints about the recently constructed paddy drying floor at Golden Fleece.
Residents alleged, too, that a named contractor has severely damaged three streets that were recently built and paved and demanded that he carry out repairs.
In response, Baksh agreed that the NDC should address the issue quickly.
