Common Law husband on trial for raping wife

– Pleads not guilty
A 30-year old common law wife yesterday told a Demerara Assize judge and jury about the night in 2005 when she was attacked and raped by her former common law husband, Victor Ramsabad, for whom she bore a child.

The victim, a teacher and student of the University of Guyana, said that she and the accused had been together as man and wife for about one and a half years, but because of his bad behavioral pattern, the relationship had ended.
According to her, she was at her home at her parents with her child who was asleep on the night of February 13, 2005, when she was attracted by a noise from her gate and filthy words by the accused who was calling upon her to open her door.
She added, “ I refused and the accused proceeded to break down  my door.  He picked up a knife from the kitchen.  He placed this on the sill of the kitchen door and pushed me to the bed in my bedroom where he had sex with me without my consent.
Led in evidence in Chief by Prosecutor Mrs. Judith Gildharie-Mursalin,  the victim told the court that she was fearful for her life, since the accused was the type of person that gave her cause for concern.
The woman said that after the accused  broke down the door  and entered the  house she noticed that his eyes were red. He was aggressive and smelt strongly of  alcohol.  He was intoxicated.    He placed her on the bed and directed that she put both  hands on the frame of the bed while he had sex with  her.
The one-time common-law wife said that the sex ordeal lasted about 15 minutes.   She said that when the accused was finished she saw him walk away naked.   He left for downstairs where he went into the hammock, but she could not recall whether he was still naked when the  police turned up.
The woman said that she gave a statement to the Grove Police Station that night and had later subjected herself to a medical examination.
According to her, as a result of his behavior, she had to take him to court for maintenance of his child.
The hearing continues today.
