Region Two farmers taking advantage of rainfall

FARMERS in Region Two (Pomeroon/Supenaam) are taking full advantage of the current heavy, consistent rainfall to do land preparation for rice planting.
Some of them, whose fields were ploughed in the dry weather, are currently using tractors to ‘back blade’ them in water.

The rain, which began to fall just after midday Sunday, continued through the night and , by early Monday morning, irrigation canals and trenches were filled while low-lying areas were flooded.
Several drains in housing areas overflowed into yards and streets and, among the places inundated were Walton Hall Cricket Ground, La Belle Alliance Cemetery, Richmond Housing Scheme, Westbury and Bounty Hall.
However, reports said flood waters were receding quickly as sluices opened during low tide.
Cash crop farmers are also using rain water on their farms, including those in Cozier Agriculture Scheme, whose cultivations withered under the El Nino weather and others in Wakapoa area along lower Pomeroon River.
