IT is no hidden fact that mining contributes significantly to Guyana’s economy. However, I am very disappointed that certain persons within the mining industry are setting out to create corruption and disharmony among small and medium scale miners.
I refer to a particular paid advertisement by the Guyana Gold and Diamond Miners Association (GGDMA) in the Kaieteur News which is misinforming and confusing persons.
It is a deliberate attempt by large scale miners who possess large leases with the intent to attract foreign investors solely regardless of the consequences for the small and medium miners’ well-being.
These individuals should refrain from the exploitation of miners and Guyana’s mining industry and focus on the development of Guyana.
The revenue generated from mining benefits the people of Guyana, miners included, in areas like infrastructure, education and health. It helps in the development of the hinterland through the construction of roads, thereby benefiting miners.
Guyana is evolving and this is not the time to be selfish. We need to look at the well-being of our families, the well-being of various miners and our country.
