BRAND Manager of Castrol, Leonard Khan, and Company Secretary Abdool Kadir, both of the Guyana Oil Company (Guyoil) on behalf of their organisation made the magnanimous gesture of handing over a cheque for $300 000 to president of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control, Peter Abdool yesterday in the boardroom of the company’s Waterloo Street location.
Khan stated that the record would show that this is not the first encounter that Guyoil is having with sponsoring a sporting event and said that they are always enthusiastic about playing a part to better the local sporting community.
“As the record would show we are always with sports and of recent we have come to support the Guyana Boxing Board of Control to help the young fighters better their careers,” Khan said.
Kadir reiterated the fact that the GBBC is doing a good thing in helping the young boxers gain exposure and experience, and he lauded the GBBC and Abdool for their efforts and said that in being the good corporate citizen that Guyoil is they too wish to do their part as is evident by yesterday’s proceedings.
Abdool expressed his sincere gratitude on behalf of the GBBC. He noted the importance of what the Guyana Fight Night Card aka Friday Night Fights aspires to do which is to give the amateur boxers a chance to showcase their talent and the amateur boxing fraternity at large as much exposure as is needed and to bring the youngsters in the discipline to the board.
The GBBC boss noted the initiative has been a success so far as this is the third instalment since its inception on February 26 of this year. He gave evidence of the fecundity of the initiative by noting that Mandessa Moses and Elton Dharry made a name for themselves by competing at that forum.
He once again thanked the sponsors for their generosity and stressed their importance by revealing that the admission fee for the fights is $500 which is strategically aimed at getting crowd support since it won’t be too costly to attend the fights. He noted that additional sponsors such as Guyoil are important.
The cheque is to cover six more instalments over the coming six months.
