IAC invites all to Indian arrival in Guyana observances

…expresses concern about abuse of women and children
The Indian Arrival Committee (IAC) extends an invitation to all groups which are involved in activities to commemorate the arrival of Indians in Guyana, to participate in related events in observance of the 172nd anniversary this year.
The IAC commends these groups and recognises that through their efforts, they have ensured that the rich culture which was brought to these shores and kept, despite adversities, by our ancestors has survived and is being adhered to and nurtured by many across this land,” the IAC said in a press statement yesterday.

“The IAC feels that the historic arrival of our forefathers from India must continue to be observed and celebrated. These celebrations must holistically reflect a national effort in this regard.

“The IAC therefore welcomes the participation of all groups which might be interested in this national commemorative effort of the 172nd anniversary of Indian arrival in Guyana. The first Mela for 2010 will be held at the National park on Sunday, April 25; the second on Sunday, May 02, at the Anna Regina Community Centre Ground; and the final on May 05, at the Port Mourant Community Centre Ground. Gates open from 14:00 hrs for all three events.

“The IAC also wishes to take this opportunity to register its profound concern over the numerous reported incidents of abuse perpetrated on women and children, especially the molestation of young girls. Many Guyanese have expressed their concern to the IAC in this regard.

“The IAC urges the authorities to be thorough in their related investigations so that the perpetrators can face the brunt of the law. The IAC’s concerns are not confined to young Indian girls, but to all victims who fall prey to paedophiles and abusive spouses and relatives.

“During the 2010 celebrations, the IAC will have as a sub-theme the condemnation of violence perpetrated against women and children. Again, the IAC invites all to join in vehemently condemning these abuses and to support the traumatised victims and efforts to rid society of such behaviour,” the statement concluded.
