THE Indian Arrival Committee (IAC), in collaboration with the Regional Administration in Region Two (Pomeroon/Supenaam) will hold a grand colourful mela on May 2, at Anna Regina Community Centre ground on the Essequibo Coast. It is to mark 172 years since East Indians arrived in this country, Regional Vice-Chairman, Mr. Vishnu Samaroo said at a meeting with IAC executive members last Monday.
Speaking in the Regional Boardroom at Anna Regina, he said thousands of Essequibians usually attend the annual mela and look forward to the occasion.
Samaroo said preparations for the fair have already begun.
Executive member of the IAC, Mr. Raymond Azeez told the gathering that several other melas will be staged across the country, including at the National Park in Georgetown and Port Mourant, Corentyne, Berbice.
He said the melas will provide pure entertainment in the form of songs, dances, poetry, drama and a wide variety of sweetmeats.
According to Azeez, this year’s mela will be different from the previous years because only local performers will be featured.
Another IAC executive member, Mr. Aditya Persaud said there will be a tassa drumming competition which will be a main feature of the celebrations.
