Power sharing not the best option right now

IN response to Eric Philips’s letter in Kaieteur News yesterday I wish to state that the power sharing between the Guyanese government and its opposition is already a failed process before it is even seriously contemplated. What has been evident time and again is that most of the politicians are only out for their own gain. I ask this now, should power sharing or shared governance be seriously considered and/or put into effect, would the need of the people be put before the need of the politicians?  Would they use their positions to further the agenda of their support base and use it constructively to represent their party?  Or will we see more selfish grabbing when these individuals are allowed some form of power?
I am not dismissing the idea of power sharing but I would like to know if these individuals can be trusted to use their offices to work for the people of Guyana.
The Guyanese people need to make their voices heard; they need to inform their party leaders that the need of the Guyanese public has to come first before their own selfish gain.
I believe that some form of consensus needs to be reached between the Government and the opposition, but whether this consensus will entail the sharing of power is unknown and maybe not necessarily in the best interest of Guyana.
Further, since it took office, this Government has instituted a number of measures in the National Assembly that includes the opposition parties in the decision making process.
I wish to point out too that not only in Guyana is an incumbent President immune to prosecution; this is also evident in the United States and a number of other countries.
First we have to realise the part that ethnic tension will play in this process.  It is my opinion that the Guyanese society need not be even more divided in such a manner, rather, what we need is an administration that has the interest of all of our people at heart.  And I think that Mr. Jagdeo, from the time that he took office, has been trying to achieve this.
