PI into National Psychiatric Hospital murder charge continues

THE preliminary inquiry (PI) into the charge against the man accused of murdering psychiatric patient Ramnauth Persaud continued Tuesday, before Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo at New Amsterdam Court in Berbice.
In the dock was fellow patient Jermaine Benjamin, who is charged with the May 2, 2009 offence, allegedly committed at the National Psychiatric Hospital, also in Berbice.

Benjamin was an in-patient at the mental institution when he is alleged to have gone berserk, hitting several other patients with a fire extinguisher, resulting in the hospitalisation of Harry Ramnarain, Gregory Mendonca, Errol De Younge and Ramnarine Lallit and the death of Persaud.
Testifying at the PI Tuesday was Police Corporal Sunil Singh, who was cross- examined by Senior Counsel Marcel Crawford, before the proceedings were adjourned to April 13.
