Judge grants bail to illegal gun, ammo defendant

JUSTICE Winston Patterson, in the Berbice High Court Tuesday, granted bail, in the sum of $150,000, to 19-year-old Yogindra Sheem Singh, who had been previously refused by a magistrate.
Senior Counsel Marcel Crawford made the successful application on behalf of Singh, who faces a joint charge of being in illegal possession of a .38 Special revolver with matching rounds.

The petition said, that, last February 25, Singh had been a passenger in a hire car, from Lancaster, Corentyne to New Amsterdam, with the driver being Michael Butcher.
The vehicle was stopped by Police and the last passenger to enter it fled before the gun and bullets were found in a pocket behind the driver’s seat.
The other passengers were arrested and charged with having the unlicensed firearm and ammo.
But the petitioner, Singh’s mother, Savitree Devo Ramashwar said her son was in the front seat and those in the rear gave statements that the gun and bullets were the property of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) and had been left there by a policeman.
Butcher was also charged but was released on $75,000 bail in the lower Court.
