Wisburg secure 1-0 win over New Silvercity
WISBURG Secondary needled their way past New Silvercity Secondary 1-0 on Tuesday, to jump into the pole position in Group B and ensure themselves a semi-final place on the penultimate day of the preliminary round in the Edward ‘Screw’ Richmond Memorial Linden Under-18 football championships in Linden.
Needing a win or a draw on Tuesday against their opponents, Wisburg Secondary got the lone goal of the game in the 26th minute, to seal a spot into the final four. The name of the scorer was not available up to press time.
Wisburg therefore ended with four wins, two  losses and a draw for their 13 points and will most likely be joined by Christianburg/Wismar Secondary, who are on 12 points from four wins and a loss, as the Group B qualifiers.
But Christianburg/Wismar, whose only loss has been to New Silvercity are 12 points, and even if they lose against School of Excellence will still be ahead of New Silvercity who with 10 points occupy third place.
Ironically, Christianburg/Wismar’s only loss was to New Silvercity.
The final game in this round-robin group between Christianburg/Wismar and School of Excellence will be played this afternoon and is of academic interest, as the latter only have one point from a drawn game with four losses and did not show up for their last encounter.
Today’s game will therefore determine the order of finish in group B as the top school in one group will play the second- place team in the other group to battle for berths in the final which is set for Saturday.
New Silvercity Secondary finished third in the group on eight points, having won two matches and lost two while having two draws.
Mackenzie High School topped Group A with 16 points from five wins and one draw ahead of Linden  Foundation Secondary placing second on 12 points after four wins and two losses.
