The GAWU College has risen again

TRAINING for GAWU’s members has many objectives, two primary ones being to equip the members to understand and function better in their roles  as union members or leaders and to improve their abilities to be agents of production in whatever agency or bargaining unit they operate in -the sugar industry or the marine, forestry or rice sectors.
The membership of GAWU will be exposed to various levels of training and orientation to upgrade their knowledge and skills at this new college under Comrade Nain Chanderpaul. I wish to note Gawk’s glorious track record of involvement in the labour movement of Guyana. Indeed, Dr Jagan’s memories of a college are now being fulfilled, and whose life-long commitment to uplifting his people’s lives will live on forever. GAWU’s entire headquarters was gutted by the fiery flames of hatred which began in Regent Street. Naturally, this great loss means a lot for our former college and training school, a great portion of the college’s institutional memory had been erased in a matter of minutes.
GAWU as a union has fought many battles before. During the decades of struggle for industrial and political democracy, the organisation lost many stalwarts, including Kowsilla. However, like Cheddi Jagan at the grave of the Enmore Martyrs in 1948, GAWU commits and rededicates its existence and energies to the promotion of workers welfare and the future well-being of the Guyanese nation. The GAWU College has risen again. Lectures, training and discussions will once more take place there. The opening of this college brings back memories to me of the relentless struggles waged by GAWU and its membership throughout the country. Congratulations on your magnificent victory.
