Whittington’s header helps Milerock edge past Topp XX

GFF Super League …
MILEROCK scored a 1-0 win over fellow Linden side Bakewell Topp XX as the national ‘Win with CONCACAF’ National Football League continued at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground last Sunday night.
Both sides, sporting a fresh set of players in their lineup, showed much energy and purpose in battling each other.

However, the Upper Demerara Champions were able to come away with a much needed win as Gerald Whittington (Jr) headed home the lone goal of the game in the 49th minute.
The winning goal came after a player was brought down midway on the right in Topp XX’s half of the field. Kevin  Sullivan’s left foot curling shot was met by a perfect  head-shot by the sturdy Whittington who was able to send the  ball to the last post from left top of the six yards box  beating Topp XX’s goalkeeper Carlos Brown in the process.
Both teams did squander a few chances and another goal scored by Milerock with the same combination of Sullivan and Whittington was ruled off-side.
Four minutes after the first goal was registered. Whittington was, however, sent off after he got a second yellow card by referee Felix Inniss, in the 80th minute.
Milerock now share the top spot in the league with nine points after two wins and a loss. They have played one game more than Alpha United, with whom they share the podium, along with Buxton United.
Milerock coach Bryan Joseph said after the game that the victory “gave us three more points. Obviously we are looking to get all the points we can get. Tonight’s victory brings  us close to the top and we hope by the time this tournament  comes to a close we must be in striking distance – if we
are not at the top but somewhere there to have an  opportunity to win the tournament”.
Joseph said that among the team’s goals is to win at least one of the national tournaments, either the National League, the Super Eight or the Final Four – to win one of those and also appear in the final of all of them. This is a positive step to progress and we have a long way to go. He said defensively his team did not play as they should and the finishing leaves much to be desired.
