Top Cat Productions stages ‘Fences’ with CXC students in mind

Top Cat Theatre Productions has taken a giant step by staging August Wilson’s FENCES, for the timely benefit of students writing the English B paper this May 12. By targeting Forms Three through Five, the Fifth Formers will have a fresh impactful concept  of the drama. Then  those Fourth and Third Form students now reading the text  will have a great  advantage over  their Form Five counterparts, because they now have one whole year  to work with their teachers on the special nuances that a live performance brings out.
This educational experience is a boon for the youths now on the threshold of adulthood, as the play takes a harsh look at the role of parents that dictate a child’s future, even from birth.
The pitfalls that the struggling family struggle with will only be filled by a positive fresh new generational thinking. FENCES boasts a cast of seven players who will engage in a Master Class involving some ten thousand students and teachers across Guyana. The very best dramatic  stars include Best Actress Sonia Yarde as Rose, Lynden Jumbie Jones as Gabriel, Best Producer Godfrey Naughton Henry as Troy Maxson, also Best Director nominee is the director, several times Best Actor  Travis Chase as Cory Maxson, Gerard Gilkes as Lyons, Clement Stanford as Jim Bono and Oceanna Hoppie as Raynell.
Students are being invited to view the play at the National Cultural Centre, Georgetown, at the Lower Corentyne Secondary, the New Amsterdam Multilateral School, the Cotton Field Secondary School Essequibo Coast, and the Lichas Hall Linden.
The production cycle runs from April 13 to April 24., beginning at the Centre.  All shows begin at 12:00 hours. The tickets cost $400, bound in books of fifty tickets. The books will cost $20.000 each, and are available on request from the principals, heads of department or form teachers, who, by the way, will have complimentary passes to all shows.
Requests have been sent out to many business places for them to purchase books for donation to students who cannot afford the price of admission, as no child should be denied the right to the best opportunity we can afford.
The theme for this production is “ IT’S COOL TO STAY IN SCHOOL.”
