Police, Army mount searches for criminal elements

32 persons held for questioning
A Guyana Defence Force helicopter circled low over East Ruimveldt , Greater Georgetown , while several members of the Police Force and the Guyana Defence Force set up a cordon and searched persons and houses in the area early yesterday morning.
ARMY, Police search in East RuimveldtA source said that the teams were searching for criminal elements suspected to be holed out in the areas, and it is understood that some persons were detained.
The operation commenced around 5:00hours and lasted for about two hours.
A release from the Police last night said that the Joint Services conducted Joint Operations in Georgetown, Berbice and Linden yesterday, during which road-block exercises and searches of identified buildings were conducted.
A total of 47 apartments and 15 buildings were searched in East Ruimveldt, Campbellville, New Amsterdam, Canje, Rainbow City, Kara Kara Housing Scheme, Amelia’s Ward, Fairs Rust and Coomacka Mines.
Thirty-two persons, including one woman, were arrested pending enquiries into various offences, including robbery under arms, unlawful possession, possession of narcotics and smoking utensils, and threatening behavior. They are in police custody, the release said.
