Two more accused drug traffickers refused bail

VERONICA Victoria Hares (no address given) yesterday appeared before Magistrate Hazel Octave-Hamilton on a drug trafficking charge.
She pleaded not guilty to the offence, particulars of which said, last February 15, at Cheddi Jagan International Airport, she trafficked in one kilogramme 26 grammes of cocaine by attempting to export it.

Her lawyer, Mr. Adrian Thompson told the Court she is sick and needs medical treatment for cancer and the defendant said she has to get medication every week.
But Police Inspector Joel Ricknauth, prosecuting, successfully objected to bail for Hares and, at his request, the case was transferred to Providence Court, East Bank Demerara, for February 26.
Hares was one of two more similarly charged defendants to be refused bail.
The other, Gaitree Singh, 40, of Lot 46 Sheriff Street, Campbellville, Georgetown, denied she had 421 grammes of cannabis (marijuana) for the purpose of trafficking on February 10.
Mr. Ronald Burch-Smith, who represented her, said she trades in clothing and would post packages to hinterland areas for sale.
The lawyer said the Police are alleging that she posted the prohibited substance but it could have been tampered with after being sent by a taxi driver.
However, Police Sergeant Shellon Daniels, prosecuting, said, after the substance was discovered, the defendant was summoned and she positively identified the package as hers.
Singh’s case was transferred to Sparendaam Court, East Coast Demerara, for February 26.
