– Child Care Director
ALL the children from the Drop-in Centre, in Hadfield Street, Georgetown, where there was a fire last Saturday, are expected to be back in school today.
They had been displaced due to blaze which gutted the upper flat of the building but Director of the Child Care and Protection Agency, Ms. Ann Greene said yesterday that they are adjusting to their circumstances and some returned to school on Monday.
She said support for them has been forthcoming and new school uniforms were purchased and footwear donated.
Temporarily, the 45 children, 21 girls and 24 boys between the ages of 11 and 17, are being housed at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport Sophia Training Complex, also in the city and Green said they have adapted to their new surroundings.
“There is a certain resilience with children. It is not that there is no pain but they have adjusted and gained support to do that,” she remarked.
However, Greene said: ”They want to get home, that is what the Drop-in Centre is for them.”
She said rehabilitation of the damaged structure has commenced but restricted to the ground floor and surroundings.
