PRINCIPAL of the Alexandra Secondary School and manager of Barbados senior cricket team, Jeff Broomes, has extended an all-expenses paid trip to national Under-15 leg-spinner Gudakesh Motie, following his exemplary performance as room attendant for the Barbados national team. According to the 56-year-old Broomes who has been the head of present Barbados and West Indies fast bowler Kemar Roach as well as former fast bowler Corey Collymore’s Alma Mater, all of Motie’s expenses would be borne by him.
“I must say first of all, thanks to the people of Berbice who treated us as family throughout our stay here. Amidst some minor hiccups which were beyond our control, our stay here has been an enjoyable one so far.
Added to that, I am impressed at the Berbice Board highlighting education and sports as one of their mandates and I must say that as a principal of one of the top academic institutions which also excel in sports, I am impressed by the performance of our room attendant who was assigned to us, Gudakesh Motie.
Motie’s performance as room attendant was beyond expectations, as he ensured everything was in place before we arrived. He represented the people of Berbice with pride and with that in mind along with the consent of his parents and the Berbice board, I will be offering to him an all-expenses paid trip to Barbados,” Broomes stated.
According to the principal, his invitation would not be extended to the young leg-spinner who plays for Albion Sports Club during Guyana’s preparation for the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) regional Under-15 competition, but after, with the possibility of Motie attending his institution for either a school term or year.
“I don’t want to interfere with Guyana’s plans for the Regional Under-15 tournament, therefore this invitation, once accepted by Motie with the consent of his family and the cricket board, would be executed after the tournament,” said Broomes.
Chairman of the night’s proceedings and treasurer of the BCB, Anil Beharry, congratulated Motie on being a fine ambassador for Berbice’s cricket and urged the 14-year-old to continue in the same vein.
In an invited comment, the 14-year-old left-arm spinner said he was delighted at the opportunity being presented and promised to continue while at the same time, improve his fine form with the ball, as he one day aims to play not only for Guyana, but the West Indies.
