El Nino causing water problems for Pomeroon residents

THE continuing El Nino weather phenomenon is creating havoc among lower Pomeroon River residents, who have turned to Akawini Creek for water to drink, cook and wash. Villagers are travelling by boats with containers every day to get their supplies from the source which leads to the Akawini Amerindian Village in the savannahs, 120 miles from Charity on Essequibo Coast.
Akawini Toshoa David Wilson had reported to Regional Chairman Alli Baksh that fishermen from Pomeroon and Essequibo Coast were putting a special tree bark into the creek to stun fishes.
He said several children suffered diarrhoea after drinking the contaminated water and Baksh instructed him to prevent all fishing activities there, pending the deploying there, by the Regional Administration, shortly, of a health team.
Pomeroon River water is heavily salted and cannot be used by farmers or residents.
