At Demerara Assizes…

Smaller trials in Ogle murder case continuing Monday
THE series of voir dire (trial within a trial) in the Ogle murder case is continuing before Justice Brassington Reynolds at the Demerara Assizes.

The smaller trials began as a result of a request, by the Prosecution and Defence lawyers, to determine the admissibility of caution statements attributed to the four accused.
The Defence is contending that the statements were obtained in contravention of the Judges’ Rules.
In the dock are Christopher Dhanrad also known as Paul Jagnandan, Azim Khan, Vijay Rajkumar called Eon and Kumar Seeraj nicknamed ‘Boysie’, all indicted for the unlawful killing of Teddy Smith on October 24, 2004.
The accused, all 17 years old, are represented by Mr. Hukumchand for Khan; Ms. Kamini Parag for Rajkumar; Mr. Euclin Gomes for Jagnandan and Mr. Adrian Thompson for Seeraj.
Leading State Prosecutor, Mr. Ganesh Hira, who is associated with Ms. Latchmie Rahamat and Ms. Rhondel Weever, announced yesterday that he had closed his presentation in relation to two of the accused, leaving Parag to begin the Defence for Rajkumar.
Because two of the Defence Counsel will be engaged in the Guyana Court of Appeal today, the proceedings have been adjourned to Monday. (George Barclay)
