Deonarine is BCB Cricketer-of-the-Year

GUYANA and West Indies batsman Narsingh Deonarine of the Albion Cricket Club was named the 2009 Berbice Cricketer-of-the-Year, last Sunday,  when the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) hosted its third annual awards ceremony in the compound of the New Amsterdam Technical Institute.
The event, organised by the Special Events Committee of the BCB, was aired live on NCN Channel 15 in Berbice as the BCB seeks to make the general public a part of its activities.
Deonarine created history in the West Indies Cricket Board 2009 Regional four-day competition, when he became the first man to aggregate 1 000 runs (1 068) in a season, which earned him a recall to the West Indies team as well as the Guyana Cricket Board’s regional player-of-the-year award.
His fine form with the bat enabled Berbice to make a clean sweep of all titles on the local scene last year, prior to his departure with the West Indies team to Australia.
Financial director of the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GT&T) Yog Mahadeo was the guest speaker while the BCB’s Public Relations Officer (PRO) Hilbert Foster did a review of the Board’s activities in 2009.
President of the Board Keith Foster, Regional Chairman Zulfiqar Mustapha J.P and treasurer Anil Beharry were among the speakers on the programme which saw a total of seventeen awards being distributed, including Under-13, Under-15, Under-17, Under-19 and Under-23 Player-of-the-Year.
