GT&T 19th Anniversary 10/10…
A MAGNIFICENT and pugnacious unbeaten half-century from skipper Carlotta Lee-John was enough to steer her team Fibre Optic to a comfortable 26-run victory over Super Nova in a specially arranged day/night female 10/10 softball match at the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) ground yesterday afternoon.
Lee-John started off on a winning note, when she won the toss and without hesitation, opted to take first strike in the game which was being used as part of the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GT&T) 19th Anniversary celebrations.
Watched by a packed DCC pavilion which included fellow staff members along with senior chairman of selectors of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) Claude Raphael, Lee-John struck 10 blistering fours between backward square leg and long on in her unbeaten 51.
Vispattie Balwant offered support with 16 which was decorated with two fours, as Fiber Optic reached 87-4 at the end of their 10 overs, despite Dawn Caines’ valiant efforts with the ball, which saw her take 2-20 for Super Nova.
When Super Nova began their reply, they lost the wickets at regular interval against some disciplined bowling which was backed by some tight fielding and were held to 61-4 from their 10 overs, with Leeann Abrams 14 (2×4), Oteisha Jackman 13, Caines’ 11 and skipper Asheika Thompson 9 (2×4).
At the end of the game, Lee-John received the Sonita Jagan trophy along with the player-or-the-match trophy for her heroic efforts with the bat. While Super Nova immediately sent out a request for a rematch, the victors also received one from the Western Union female team.
