Absent virtual complainant causes postponement

In Mondale Smith case…
KAIETEUR News reporter and television personality Mondale Smith, of Lot 1717 Princes Street, Wortmanville, Georgetown, made a second Court appearance yesterday on charges of assault causing actual bodily harm and malicious damage to property.

Defence Counsel Khemraj Ramjattan told Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson that the virtual complainant, Leon Bagot, who was also charged with maliciously damaging property and assault causing actual bodily harm, has fled the jurisdiction.

The lawyer said he was informed, by Smith, that Bagot, who was released on station bail, went to Suriname but is aware that an arrest warrant was issued for him.

Police Inspector Stephen Telford, prosecuting, confirmed that the warrant is out for Bagot but said he is not in a position to report on it and requested another date to do so.

He was given February 10.

Smith first appeared in Court on Wednesday, January 13, when he pleaded not guilty to the offences, particulars of which alleged that, on January 3, he unlawfully assaulted Bagot and damaged a $25,000 glass, property of Banks DIH, at Demico House. (Nathalene DeFreitas)
