Duo facing more visa scam charges granted bail

ACTING Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson yesterday overruled a Police objection and granted bail to Tulsie Persaud, 30, of Lot 4 Cemetery Road, Triumph and Simone King also known as Dianne De Nobrega, 29, of Lot 101 Phase 2, Good Hope, both on East Coast Demerara.

The duo made another Court appearance yesterday, charged with more offences related to a visa scam and they were each ordered to post $1M surety.

Police Inspector Stephen Telford, prosecuting, had again, objected to pre-trial liberty for the accused, pointing out that, on the previous occasion, they had undertook to make restitution to the virtual complainants in those cases but did not.

The Prosecutor said the new charges are similar but involved different victims and, if allowed freedom, it is possible the accused might flee the jurisdiction.

Defence Counsel Nigel Hughes wondered how Persaud would make repayments, having been incarcerated for more than a week.

The magistrate fixed February 5 for a report.
Particulars of the additional charges said:
* between May 8 and May 22, 2009, with intent to defraud, the accused obtained $920,000 from Kishun Garykam, by falsely pretending that they were in a position to obtain a genuine United States visa for him, knowing it to be false;

* between November 24 and December 2, 2009, with intent to defraud, they obtained $1.2M from Angela Elizabeth Chung, by falsely pretending that they were in a position to obtain a genuine U.S. visa for her, knowing it to be false;

* on May 22, 2009, with intent to defraud, they obtained $2M from Rajdai Chitlall, by falsely pretending that they were in a position to obtain a genuine U.S. visa for her, knowing it to be false and

* between February 20 and March 12, 2009, with intent to defraud, they obtained $779,000 from Vishwantie Sookdeo, by falsely pretending that they were in a position to obtain a genuine U.S. visa for her, knowing it to be false.
