Proposals for Kitty Market still being examined

THE City Council of Georgetown is contemplating relocating vendors of Kitty Market, temporarily, to the abandoned abattoir in David Street, Kitty, on a recommendation made long ago by Deputy Mayor Robert Williams.

However, in an invited comment yesterday, Mr. Williams told the Guyana Chronicle that, although the City Engineer’s Department has condemned the market building, because it is on the list of the National Trust, the Council has difficulty to have it demolished.

But, when the municipality is ready to do so, the suggestion to have the vending accommodated in David Street, until works are completed on the edifice, will be considered.

Clerk of Markets Schulder Griffith, who also spoke to the Guyana Chronicle yesterday, said officers on the Public Health and Markets Committee, together with the City Works Committee, visited the Kitty selling location recently.

He said it was with a view to look at whether moving the vendors on a temporary basis was feasible.

Mr. Griffith is proposing that the roofing be taken down and replaced with a common roof, meaning there will no longer be a two-storey building and leaking and flooding would be significantly reduced.

He pointed out that Kitty Market is a community facility and said he would be glad to see it return to its former glory.

Griffith maintained that something should be done, for a time at least, until the Council can afford to have it completely rehabilitated.

Presently, no works are being done there, where it is business as usual and the responsible committee is making its final determination on the proposals.

Griffith mentioned, too, that the invitation for private developers to invest in the place is still open and persons wishing to do so can indicate to the Council.
