Support for LCDS is recognition of good governance

THE support gained, in the past months, for Guyana’s Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS) is being lauded by the Private Sector Commission (PSC) as recognition of the country’s good governance.

PSC Chairman, Mr. Gerry Gouveia, in an invited comment said: “The support for the LCDS does not only speak to the issue of the environment but also to Guyana’s ability to maintain transparency and accountability.”

He said funding channelled through the LCDS will be conditional to ensure that not only is the environment protected but that issues of good governance, transparency and accountability are embraced.

Referring to the Norway deal, Gouveia said it is indicative of the level of confidence in Guyana’s governance and respect for human rights.

“We may have individual violations but no one can accuse Guyana of having a State sponsored campaign to violate people’s human rights and people’s democratic rights,” he declared.

Norway and Guyana signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) last month, that could see Guyana receiving as much as US$250M by 2015 to assist with the implementation of the LCDS.

“The Private Sector is very optimistic,” Gouveia said, noting that the optimism is due to the efforts of President Bharrat Jagdeo.

“The President has done a good job in positioning Guyana in the world, so people know that Guyana exists and know what we stand for,” the PSC Chairman stated.

He said the LCDS has done much for this country in terms of its public and international image.
