City sticks to Thursday deadline

-will not grant further amnesty
THE Mayor and City Council (M&CC) of Georgetown will not be extending the period of amnesty after December 31, 2009, Deputy Mayor Mr. Robert Williams said Thursday.

Speaking with reporters at his office, Mr Williams said there was great reluctance to further extend the deadline, hence it is his hope that property owners would take advantage of this facility now.

In a press release, Public Relations Officer (Ag), Ms Debra Lewis, said rates-payers who are in default should make optimum use of this provision and settle their accounts at City Hall.

During this period, she said, the Council would waive all interests on accounts, provided that the demand is paid in full for 2009. However, if persons are unable to pay the demand in full, they may have to opt for a payment plan.

According to her, the Council has decided to facilitate those persons who were unable to access this facility at November 30, the date that was designated for the end of amnesty.

Lewis said that should defaulters visit the Treasury Department and settle their accounts, the municipality’s ability to honour its financial obligations to garbage and other contractors would be enhanced.

She also said it would allow for the municipality to continue providing services to the City and its citizens, such as drainage, road repairs, parks and open spaces, law enforcement, street lighting and environmental services.
