Ex-Employee charged with embezzling $6M
A UNIVERSITY of Guyana (UG) student, Garfield Pearson, (no address given) appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson charged with embezzlement, following investigations into a fraud at Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA), where he was employed.
He pleaded not guilty to the offence, particulars of which said, between January 2008 and October 21, 2009, being employed by GRA, he embezzled $6M.
Police Inspector Stephen Telford, prosecuting, had objected to bail and disclosed that another person is expected to face a similar charge soon.
But the magistrate granted the defendant pre-trial freedom on $1M recognisance and ordered him to lodge his passport until January 5, 2010.
The Prosecutor had asked for the travel document to be surrendered, pointing out that Pearson’s wife lives in Barbados.
