… Victoria Kings face New Amsterdam United, Rosignol United tackle Riddim Squad today at Blairmont
TWO more Georgetown teams advanced to the second round of the 20th Annual Kashif and Shanghai football tournament when action in the competition continued on Friday evening at the Enmore ground with a double-header card.
Newly promoted Premier League team Riddim Squad scraped past East Coast Demerara’s Ann’s Grove by a 2-1 margin, while another East Demerara team Buxton United suffered a 0-5 drubbing at the hands of Sunburst Camptown in the feature match.
Sheldon Hope and Steffon Hope both found the back of Ann’s Grove’s net in the 59th and 66th minutes respectively to give their team Riddim Squad a 2-1 win while Rawl Gittens pulled one back for the East Coast team from a free kick that was taken from just outside Riddim Squad’s 18-yard box.
In the feature game, Chris Comacho sent Camptown into the lead from a free kick that was taken from approximately 25 metres from the opposition’s goal on the right side, the ball beating the opposing team’s custodian comprehensively.
Lance Rawlston then made it 2-0 for the Campbellville-based unit after he received a cross inside Buxton United’s penalty box and finished clinically.
With the score reading 2-0 at the interval, Camptown came out more purposeful in the second session and Telson McKinnon registered a treble.
He firstly evaded a challenge from the defence and plastered the ball into the back of Buxton United’s net in the 51st minute.
This was followed by two more goals off his boot in the 61st and 63rd minutes.
The exit of the two teams now means that East Demerara has only Victoria Kings to rely on to take the bacon home to the East Coast and that team (Victoria Kings) will engage New Amsterdam United this afternoon at the Blairmont ground from 17:30 h.
The feature match this evening brings together Rosignol United and Riddim Squad at the same venue from 20:00 h.
Today also, the Guyana/USA women’s team will face off with the Guyana-based women’s team in a fixture of the Guyana Football Federation’s Goodwill Series which has already been won by team USA who defeated Guyana 5-0 on Thursday at the national stadium and Suriname 20-0 at the Enmore ground on Friday.
Meanwhile, Grove Hi-Tech, Pele, Fruta Conquerors and Seawall United have all advanced to the second round of the Kashif and Shanghai tournament.
East Bank’s Grove Hi-Tech beat Upper Demerara’s Milerock by a 1-0 margin, while Pele of Georgetown defeated Santos, also of Georgetown, 4-1.
Fruta Conquerors of Georgetown beat Upper Demerara’s Eagles United 3-1 and Seawall United of West Demerara upstaged Rusal of Linden 2-1.
