MAGISTRATE Fazil Azeez yesterday overruled a Defence application and refused bail to Andre Cyrus, 35, of Lot 168 James Street, Albouystown, Georgetown, who is charged with larceny from the person.
It is alleged that, on December 2, the defendant, who pleaded not guilty, stole an $8,000 handbag with $1M, belonging to Edward Singh in it, from Loretta Brown.
Attorney-at-law Mr. Patrice Henry, for Cyrus, said he was arrested during a raid but was never put on an identification parade and should be allowed pre-trial liberty on reasonable surety.
But Police Inspector Stephen Telford, prosecuting, while not objecting to the grant, requested the sum be substantial.
The magistrate said, however, that, during this season, people must be able to walk on the streets without fear of being attacked and robbed.
Cyrus was remanded to prison until tomorrow.
