Three nabbed after robbery attempt on cricket watcher

A HUCKSTER from Lima on Essequibo Coast was severely beaten by three armed bandits around 00:30 h Monday in another attempted robbery.

Clairmont Scott told the Guyana Chronicle he had been watching the Australia versus West Indies cricket test when his door was suddenly kicked open by the trio who stormed into his one flat concrete house.

He said the men, who had handguns, dragged him outside after he became speechless and could only throw a vase off a glass table to alert his sisters and other relatives, who were asleep in two bedrooms, what was happening.

One of the robbers, who was masked and wearing dark clothing, wrapped a towel around his neck and pulled it tight until Scott became unconscious.

When he awoke, he was lying in front his house on sand. The bandits had escaped after neighbours heard noise and screamed, attracting the attention of others who turned on lights and rushed out on the road.

Having been thwarted in their attempt, the intruders jumped over a fence and entered a getaway motor car that was waiting for them on the public road.

Scott said the Police responded promptly and were involved in a high speed chase before intercepting the fleeing men at Three Friends, also on Essequibo Coast.

A search of the vehicle that conveyed the criminals yielded masks and guns and they were taken into custody.

Subsequent, unconfirmed reports said one of the detained men is a soldier but investigations are continuing.
