Malvern, GCC, Hikers all in with a chance of lifting men’s title

MALVERN of Trinidad, GCC and Hikers of Guyana are all in with a chance of lifting the title of the 6th Annual Guyana Hockey Board (GHB)/Diamond Mineral Water International Indoor Hockey tournament which climaxes today at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.

Malvern’s male team, with 15 points to their name from five victories to date will meet Hikers (six points) in one of three preliminary round matches but is already assured of a semi-final spot while GCC (six points) will meet Western Dragons to determine another semi-final spot.

Should GCC lose against Western Dragons, then Hikers will play Old Fort (nine points) and GCC will have to play Malvern, but if GCC win, they will play Old Fort and Hikers will play Malvern.

In the ladies’ competition, Malvern will play GCC as both teams defeated Hikers. Malvern won by a 2-0 margin while GCC beat their local counterparts 3-1.

In the veterans’ category, Hikers lead the points standing with nine points and they are followed by defending champions Fatima of Trinidad with seven points.

GCC have five points, Old Fort three and Malvern one.
Today’s matches are expected to be brimful of interest as all the participating men’s open teams are seeking to capture the US$1 000 cash prize and a trophy.

.The second-placed team will receive US$500.
In results from yesterday’s preliminary round matches, Old Fort thrashed Western Dragons 12-2 in a men’s open fixture.

Mikhail Smith netted a helmet-trick in the 5th, 19th, 25th and 39th minutes, while Jason DeSantos supported with a treble in the 6th, 18th and 19th minutes.

Roger Daniels (12th and 29th) and Chris Low (37th and 39th) each registered doubles and Dwayne Alleyne scored one goal in the 21st minute.

For Western Dragons, Deon Carew and Jermaine Murray scored one goal each in the 9th and 22nd minutes respectively.

Also in the men’s open category Malvern edged GCC 5-4 through goals from Wayne Legerton (5th and 40th), Joshua DeFour (13th and 32nd) and Jonathan Warren 23rd).

Scoring for GCC were Orland Semple (18th), Dwayne Scott (34th), Devin Hooper (39th) and Kevin Spencer (40th).

Malvern also defeated Hikers 6-2 with DeFour registering a treble in the 21st, 25th and 35th minutes and Darrel Hume (25th), Legerton (40th) and Warren supporting with one goal each.

For Hikers, Timothy McIntosh scored in the 14th minute and Shaquille Assanah in the 24th minute.

In the veterans’ category, GCC and Malvern played to a 4-4 draw.

Kelvin Hume (14th and 27th) and Charles Carter (37th and 40th) both scored doubles for Malvern while for GCC, Damon Woodruff (2nd), Jonathan Yearwood (13th), Philip Fernandes (28th) and Alan Fernandes (31st) were the goalscorers.

In the other veterans’ game that was played yesterday, Hikers defeated Fatima 4-1 with the winning goals coming off the sticks of Sheldon Corlette (25th and 39th), Andy Jagananand (15th) and Brian Asregado (27th).

Fatima got their consolation goal from Derek Lee in the 31st minute.
Play in the competition commences at 09:00 h today at the same venue.
