RESIDENTS OF Melanie Damishana on the East Coast Demerara will soon be the beneficiaries of a modernized Post Office, which will ensure that services on the East Coast Demerara are efficient and meet the needs of the customers.
Chairman of the Guyana Post Office Corporation (GPOC) Bishop Juan Edghill announced Thursday at a press conference in New Amsterdam that the Post Office at Melanie Damshana had been closed for almost five years due to the state of disrepair it was in and the lack of adequate finances with which to rectify this problem at that point, since the GPOC is run on self-generated funds.
The Capital Works for the new Post Office to be constructed has recently been awarded, according to Bishop Edghill, with the land being donated by the Regional Co-op. The new office should be completed by the end of March 2010.
He urged that citizens throughout Guyana ensure that they treat the facilities with care and regard since the services offered are for the benefit of society.
Referring to rehabilitation and renovation works being carried out at the Skeldon, Eversham and Nigg Post Offices in Berbice, Bishop Edghill said that in excess of $8M has be expended to ensure that quality work is being done and the offices are upgraded with modernized equipment and facilities to provide efficient services to the public.
He posited that security measures have been put in place and the GPOC is doing everything in its power to ensure that staff and customers are secure and the GPOC is in full co-operation with the Guyana Police Force even though the Corporation has put its own measures in place.
The GPOC has over the years been working to modernize all of its 65 locations with the implementation of a number of initiatives and significant steps which include the training of staff in customer care and efficiency.
