Malvern end Old Fort good run of form
… Barbados’ YMCA humiliated once again
OLD Fort Hockey Club’s good run of form was ended yesterday by Malvern of Trinidad when the Guyana Hockey Board/Diamond Mineral Water International Indoor Hockey Festival continued at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.

Contesting the men’s open category, Malvern edged Old Fort 6-5 through goals off the sticks of Wayne Legerton in the 14th, 21st and 28th minutes, Colin Byron in the 18th minute, Darry Harry in the 34th minute and Joshua Defour in the 38th minute.

Replying for Old Fort, Aderemi Simon netted a treble in the 2nd, 33rd and 34th minutes while Jonathan Roberts (12th) and Brandon Kowlesar (15th) were the other goalscorers.

The South Ruimveldt-based team are, however, still in the race for championship honours as they had defeated YMCA of Barbados 10-2 and GCC 6-5 on Thursday.

In their match against GCC on Thursday, Jason DeSantos netted a treble in the 6th, 15th and 26th minutes while Canada-based Guyanese Jonathan Roberts scored a double in the 18th and 19th minute and guest player Nicolas Wren of Trinidad chipped in with one goal in the 31st minute to give Old Fort their second victory to date in the tournament.

Yesterday, also, defending champions Hikers thrashed YMCA 10-3 with goals coming off the sticks of Robert France in the 6th, 16th, 36th and 38th minutes; Shane Samuels in the 17th, 28th and 33rd minutes Jerazeno Bell in the 2nd and 9th minutes and Timothy McIntosh in the 11th minute.

Dario Lewis (26th), Shawn Harewood (27th) and Rico Bourne (31st) were the goalscorers for YMCA.

In other results from yesterday’s matches, GCC edged YMCA 4-3 after being held to a 2-2 margin at the interval.

Devin Hooper netted a double for the local side in the 26th and 32nd minutes while Leonard George and Semple chipped in with one each in the 14th and 15th minutes respectively.

Scoring for YMCA were Rohan Thomas in the 9th and 15th minutes and Harewood in the 13th minute.

In the veterans’ category for male teams, Old Fort brushed aside Hikers 9-4.

For Old Fort, Dexter Wyles registered a treble in the 3rd, 14th and 21st minutes, while Gavin Hope (30th and 33rd) and Robert Hussain (34th and 35th) netted doubles. The other two goals were scored by Ivor Thompson (16th) and Dwayne Alleyne (18th).

In the veterans’ category also, GCC and Fatima of Trinidad played to a 3-3 stalemate.

For GCC, Rawl Davson scored a double in the 14th and 36th minute while Philip Fernandes scored the other goal in the 41st minute.

For Fatima, Colin Young netted a double in the 10th and 24th minutes while Shawn Tang supported with one goal in the 22nd minute.

The competition will continue today at the same venue beginning at 09:00 h.
