A POLICE Constable, attached to the Traffic Department at Springlands Station, Corentyne, Berbice, appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson yesterday, charged with indecently assaulting a woman in custody.
Gavin Holder, 32, told the Court he lives at Cane Grove, East Coast Demerara, but Police Inspector Stephen Telford, prosecuting, said the accused, initially, claimed he was living in the Springlands Station Compound.
Particulars of the indictable charge said Holder committed the offence between October 17 and 23 last, at Springlands Station.
The Prosecutor successfully opposed bail for the cop and asked that the case be transferred to Springlands Court.
Telford said the victim was arrested for wandering and, while she was being detained, Holder sexually assaulted her.
The Prosecutor said persons tasked with the responsibility of protecting others cannot be allowed to get away with such conduct.
He also mentioned that another policeman was to appear on a similar charge but disappeared after being ordered to get dressed at the Tactical Services Unit (TSU), Eve Leary, Georgetown.
The magistrate indicated she would issue a warrant for the abscondee and set Holder’s next Court date as December 21.
