Five men held for alleged vigilante beating

POLICE have five men in custody following a report of the abduction and assault of three others, in alleged vigilante action at Canal Number Two Polder, West Bank Demerara.

A Police statement said, after the theft of poultry, about 21:30 h on Saturday, the three victims were abducted and beaten by a group of ten men who blamed them for the Canal Number Two Polder larceny.

The Police reported that the 10 men, some dressed in dark clothing and claiming to be policemen, were travelling in three motor cars.

They went to the home of Andy Singh, 17, of Belle West, told him he was wanted at a station and placed him in one of the vehicles.

They then proceeded to a liquor restaurant, from where they picked up Nandkumar Darshan, 17 and Dhanraj Chattergoon, 19, also from Belle West and took them to a chicken farm at Alliance, Canal Number Two, where they accused the trio of stealing the fowls and beat them about their bodies.

Police said, later, at 23:10 h, some of the 10 men took the three they held to Wales Police Station, also on West Bank Demerara, where they reported that the men had stolen chickens.

However, as a result of investigations conducted, the owner of the poultry farm and four other men were arrested and, together with, two motor cars, are being detained.

The three men who suffered blows were conveyed to West Demerara Regional Hospital where they were treated and sent away.
