The National Blood Transfusion Service (NBTS) now has a daily target of 43 units if it is to meet the year-end target of 8,000 units; and according to NBTS Coordinator Ms. Shameeza Mangal, although the buffer stock is doing well, donors are being encouraged to visit blood banks.
Mangal explained that voluntary givers are welcome at all six sites nationwide, including:
* NBTS headquarters in Georgetown;
* New Amsterdam Hospital;
* Suddie Hospital;
* Linden Hospital; and
* West Demerara Regional Hospital.
She explained that the bank is trying to stockpile the units, particularly before the Christmas season, since during this time the influx of donors is significantly reduced and it is a period during which emergency needs are expected.
She noted that over the past days the majority of blood donors are persons who were called back to the bank.
“I have a recruiter working to call back donors to make other donations. On Saturday, all 14 of the persons who visited the bank were those we called,” Mangal.
A blood drive is scheduled at the Caribbean Community annex today.
There 45 units are expected to be collected.
And on Friday, the National Milling Company (NAMILCO) is expected to host a blood drive.
