EXCITEMENT, drama and good Caribbean vibes rocked the Georgetown Cricket Club Ground, Bourda, Georgetown, on Sunday night when the final show of the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GT&T) Cellink Jingle and Song Competition was successfully staged.
A 32-year-old Butcher, Malika Boyd, on the eve of her birthday walked away with the title and bragging rights to be called this year’s GT&T Cellink Jingle and Song Competition winner.
In the midst of all the tension, Boyd after being announced winner, collapsed on the stage while smiling with surprise mixed with disbelief.
After a few seconds, Boyd was back on her feet jumping and smiling, sharing in the experience with a well packed audience awaiting her first official performance as the winner this year.
In an interview, Boyd told this newspapers that she is ‘ecstatic and thrilled’ after winning the competition. She noted that from day one all she wanted to do was to drive off with the car but realised in the end that the competition had much more to offer her.
Boyd was a crowd favourite from the beginning of the quarter-final round of the Jingle and Song Competition. The Lindener said that finally her dream has come true.
Crowd favourite and star performer, Carlvin Burnett was given first runner-up.
The crowd, as expected, was not pleased with this decision and didn’t mixed matters with letting their views out. Michael Thompson, another crowd favourite had to settle for second runner-up, sealing off the top three performers.
Both Burnett and Thompson, in an interview, thanked all of their fans and supporters for ensuring that they have a lifetime of experiences to carry with them for as long as they live.
Thompson thanked all of the Berbicians while Burnett could not help thanking his hometown supporters as well.
The journey now begins for these three performers having proven that they are better than over 300 potential artistes who auditioned initially from the inception.
Malika Boyd will take home a Toyota VIOS (Blue) motor car, a one year endorsement contract with GT&T, complimentary recording of a single, an Apple IPOD Touch, a Samsung Bluetooth Headset and a cellular phone.
The second place winner, Carlvin Burnett will bask in the glory of taking home $500,000, a one year endorsement contract with GT&T, an Apple IPOD Touch, a return trip to Jamaica and a cellular phone, while the third place winner, Michael Thompson takes home $250,000, a return trip to Trinidad, and an Apple IPOD Touch and cellular phone.
A sizable crowd cheered the three finalists who wooed them as they belted out popular songs and secured the judge’s approval.
The other contestants were allowed to each sing a song of their choice that evening too.
The event saw local artistes such as Shelly G, Fojo, Dallas Forte, Sean English, Hector Jory, Cleon Cadogan.
The event this year was sponsored by Ansa McAl Ltd, Beharry Automotive Ltd, NCN, Impressions, HJTV, Caribbean Airlines and Wireless Connection, under the theme ‘Caribbean Rhythm, Guyanese Vybz’.
