PNC, AFC leadership tone, behaviour unhelpful for national unity

The Indian Arrival Committee (IAC) is very alarmed at the tone, utterances and behaviour by elements of the PNC and AFC leaderships, according to a statement from the IAC yesterday.

These positions have the possibility of inspiring a cycle of violence in our society, primarily against Indo-Guyanese, the statement continues.

“The resort to extra-parliamentary protests and unruly conduct as we saw last Thursday is reminiscent of the precursor to the 1998 and 2001-3 violence and crime wave.

“The planned opposition street protest for today is most unhelpful at a time when the world economy is facing difficulties with its expected effects on our society. Street protests in the past led to disruption of commercial and economic activities as well as violence. Why would any group which claims to have Guyana’s interest at heart go down this route?

“The IAC anticipates that the security forces will ensure that the prevailing climate of peace and security is not breached.

“The PNC and the AFC must know that resulting from their statements and action they will be held responsible for acts of violence and other disruptions to law and order.

“Also individuals and certain groups outside of Guyana must desist from fanning the flames of division and disruption.

“The IAC, a cultural group which is committed to unity and cohesion, urges all not to be misled and to take necessary precautions, especially at bus parks during the period of the street protests.

“The IAC will monitor the situation closely,” the statement concluded.
