One kidney transplant patient dies, other receiving treatment

JAIRAJ Singh, 55, on whom a kidney transplant was performed last May 23, succumbed on Monday in the High Dependency Unit (HDU) of Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH).

He had suffered complications since he was first discharged from hospital about one month after the surgery and re-admitted twice, said his son, Brijraj, who donated the organ.

Specialists from Walter Reed Army Medical Centre, who conducted the operation had said that, typically, the kidney recipient should be out of hospital within eight days and the donor between three and four days.

However, based on his recovery process, Singh remained a patient for at least one month.

Mourning the loss, Brijraj Singh recounted that his father was doing well for the first two weeks after his discharge but, one week and a half later, he started complaining of pains about the chest and had to be hospitalised again.

Subsequently, some week and a half after returning home for the second time, the older Singh complained of pains, over his entire body this time, accompanied by swelling of the knees, his son said.

He added that, on his last admission, the man was warded for just over a week but, despite his fighting spirit and will to live, he died around 18:30 h on Monday and is to be buried on Sunday.

Meanwhile, this newspaper has learnt that 55-year old Shariff Mohammed, of Number 4, West Coast Berbice, who was the beneficiary of a similar transplant, also experienced troubling side effects and was flown to the United States (U.S.), where he is still receiving further medical attention.

Both he and Singh underwent their operations within a day of each other at the GPH.
