Guyana has added two more internationally recognised referees, making it three, to its list of International Basketball Federation (FIBA) listing.

Former national captain and two time Caricom All Star player Lugard Mohan and Aubrey Younge are the latest additions, joining Sherwin Henry of Linden on the current list of FIBA accredited referees, following their successful attending the FIBA Referees Certification Clinic which conducted recently in the United States.

Yesterday the Haynes Foundation based in New Jersey, USA, which is operated by the Patrick and Paul Haynes and is unit which has been instrumental in supporting the game both locally and overseas, was the first to congratulate the two Guyanese referees on this achievement.

The Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC), the Caribbean Zone Area body which is directly affiliated to FIBA, and for which Guyana is a member, has a requirement that states a national team must have an internationally accredited referee accompany it when on tour or attending international competitions. Failing which, a fine of $1,000 is instituted for that country without a FIBA Referee.

At the same time, the country which does not have a FIBA Referee can avoid such penalties by paying the coast of another FIBA Referee from another country to accompany its team, but will have to bear all the costs for traveling by the substitute referee.

Guyana’s financial standing in the past few years has not been that strong to pay any fines when attending international championships and with only one previously FIBA Referee in Sherwin Henry, found it difficult to have referees to accompany its male and female teams at CBC organized championships.

With this acquisition it is hoped that at least where officiating is concerned that Guyana is ready to call on its referees to attend these tournaments in the future.
Guyana now increases its FIBA Certified Referee Pool to 3.
