Essequibo CBR centre laments challenges at annual conference

MEMBERS of the Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) Centre at Queenstown, on Essequibo Coast, hosted their second annual conference on Monday.

It was themed ‘United voices of the disabled for community action’ and the challenges facing the facility and an overview of the grouping were among the matters discussed.

Mr. Lloyd Griffith, who is President, told the congregation that two of the main difficulties they face are transportation and finance.

The blind man said they receive an annual $500,000 subvention from Government, to help with the management and the membership is very thankful for the gesture but the sum is too small to adequately fund most of the programmes.

Griffith lamented that they do not own a motor vehicle and it is very difficult for the members to attend relevant programmes or training workshops at the centre, because minibuses and hire cars are reluctant to transport them because of their impairment.

The Secretary, Mr. Ronald Sugrim, reported that members were involved in several activities during the year, including a day of sports, visiting schools and lecturing on blindness, a swimming competition and beans cultivation.
