ASHTON Henry called Tony, a labourer of Moleson Creek, Corentyne, was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment by Magistrate Krishendat Persaud yesterday for wounding his brother-in-law, Ryan Thomas.
The prisoner, who pleaded guilty at New Amsterdam Court, in Berbice, was initially jailed for two years but the term was reduced after his wife told the Court he is the lone breadwinner in their household and she would encounter difficulty coping with three young children.
Magistrate Persaud advised the woman to seek help from the Ministry of Homan Services and Social Security.
On the instruction of the magistrate, the virtual complainant approached the Bench and displayed a 20 centimetres sutured wound on the right side of his neck.
The Police Prosecutor, Inspector Satrohan Dayaram said Henry and Thomas were involved in an altercation on July 5, over an allegation that the convict assaulted his sister-in-law.
Dayaram said Henry took a cutlass and chopped Thomas, who was taken to Skeldon Hospital and later transferred to New Amsterdam Hospital, where he spent three days as a patient.
