Woman in CANU bust tried to burn marijuana

Court told…
CUSTOMS Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) burst into a house in Kitty and prevented a woman from burning the substance of a drug bust, a Court heard yesterday.

CANU Prosecutor Oswald Massiah related the incident to Magistrate Hazel Octave-Hamilton when Bibi Khan, of Lot 41 Dowding Street, Kitty, Georgetown, appeared on a charge of trafficking cannabis (marijuana) on July 9.

After she pleaded not guilty, Massiah said when the defendant saw the ranks, she ran into her home and locked the door.

The Prosecutor said they found it difficult to get inside and communicated with Khan through a window.

Massiah said the woman was seen with an inflammatory liquid with which she attempted to burn what was later found to be marijuana.

But the officers managed to get in before she started the fire and found more of the illicit drug in a washroom, all weighing 503 grammes, the Prosecutor said.

Attorney-at-law, Mr. Nigel Hughes, for Khan, said she has an eight-year-old who has a major obesity problem and she was closely monitoring the child when arrested.

He said, as a result, Social Services officers had to intervene and look after her.

Hughes said it is alleged that Khan’s husband has issues with the Police that led to the allegation being made against her.

Massiah, however, disclosed that Khan’s child was properly cared for and has been released into the custody of her father and an aunt.
Khan was remanded to prison until August 12.
