Police urged to serve public in a professional manner

Home Affairs Minister Clement Rohee, while acknowledging that Government is doing its part in enhancing the Guyana Police Force (GPF), has said it is imperative that individual ranks and officers do their part to improve the quality of service to the public.

Speaking to officers after the commissioning of the two remodelled police stations at East La Penitence and Brickdam Friday, Minister Rohee expressed dissatisfaction over the behaviour of some junior ranks who, by their actions, are hampering the GPF from achieving its objectives and putting stations’ security at risk.

Minister Rohee said that most members of the public have their “real contact” with the Police when they go to the stations to make a report; and for this reason he urged members of GPF to serve the public in a professional manner since it’s vital for the forging of better police/public relations and garnering the public’s support in the quest to control crime and other forms of illegal activities in the country.

He stressed that there needs to better administrative arrangements at police stations and noted that too much ‘slackness’ is taking place, based on reports sent to the Ministry on a regular basis.

“Too often lower ranks take actions on their own behalf without bringing the matter to the attention of their superiors,” the Minister stated.

He also lamented that too many persons are being locked-up without sufficient cause or without proper investigations being conducted, and that these minor issues are impacting on the public in a negative manner.

“Any rank high or low, who is of the view that he or she can behave in an uncouth, disrespectful and impolite manner towards any person who approaches a police station for help, think again, because there is no place for such ranks in the Guyana Police Force,” Minister Rohee warned. (GINA)
