– GT&T to sponsor the event
GUYANESE in the thousands are expected to converge on the Promenade and under a large tent at Brooklyn’s Restoration Plaza at a Guyana Reunion, Fun & Cultural Day over the summer holidays.
The event, which is slated to commence at 10:00hrs and end at 20:00hrs, is being organised by popular Guyanese broadcaster, Bobby Vieira and sponsored by the GT&T Call Home Guyana Phone Card.
It is being held as an alternative for those who don’t plan on doing any particular travelling this Summer holidays, and to give long-lost friends and even enemies, according to Vieira, an opportunity “to catch-up and make-up.”
Vieira said in a release that the world economic situation has caused a number of persons to look very seriously at how they spend money, since in some instances quite a large number of them are out of jobs.
He said the idea of a fun day was a miniaturised version of the Food, Cake, Art and Craft Festival, which is put on annually by his radio station — One Caribbean Radio.
The station’s studios are also located in the Restoration Plaza Complex, which houses a number of business places, including banks, restaurants, clothing stores and a Food-Town Superstore.
The promenade is a large recreational area, which has trees and benches for relaxation, as well as cafes, and hosts a number of community activities. Each year, during the summer, a huge tent is erected to host concerts, parties and conventions at the popular Brooklyn site.
Several vendors will be on hand to sell various types of Guyanese delights, while a number of Guyanese entertainers will keep the air filled with music, song and dance.
The new GT&T call-home Guyana card, which allows persons to call Guyana only, will be launched at the event.
The fun day and reunion, Vieira said, will also be attended by a number of prominent New York State and City elected officials, including New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
This year being an election year for city-wide offices, Vieira said almost every competing politician will grace the event with their presence in an effort to grasp the opportunity at seeking the votes of the large numbers expected to attend.
He added that a number of local companies have expressed an interest in displaying products and exposing their services after hearing of the planned mega event.
