LAST Sunday the Berbice Football Association (BFA) held a grand presentation ceremony of prizes and awards for the 2009 Berbice Football Association (BFA) Under-15 League football tournament at the Rosignol Community Centre ground.
Preceding the presentation, the final was played between Rosignol United and New Amsterdam United – the two teams heading the points table in the competition. Rosignol United accumulated 12 points while N/A United were on 10 points.
With two points separating them it meant that N/A United had to win in order to take the championship.
However, as luck would have it, the game ended in a 1-1 stalemate to ensure each team gained a point. Devin Boucher scored for N/A United in the 14th minute to leave the score-line at 1-0 at the half.
Dreshaun Bishop then equalised for Rosignol United in the 45th minute of the last half to secure the draw. Rosignol United ended with 13 points to cop the winner’s trophy and 15 gold medals whilst N/A United FC (11 points) took the second place trophy and 15 silver medals. Monedderlust FC placed third with 9 points, trophy and 15 bronze medals.
Meanwhile, opening the ceremony was BFA secretary Joseph Simon who acknowledged the contributions of the dedicated club officials, team coaches, team managers and some referees, along with the parents and the young players who all aided in the success of the tournament.
He also noted that the tournament could have been more successful if more teams had participated.
Simon also lamented the high cost of transport in light of defending champions Corriverton Links being forced to withdraw from the competition.
N/A United at one point surrendered a match because of travelling costs; especially since teams have to cross the Berbice River Bridge.
The Guyana Football Federation (GFF) was thanked for its support and its contribution of trophies.
Konata Simpson of N/A United FC was the highest goalscorer while the best custodian was Akeem Kadir of Rosignol United. Bishop was named MVP of the tournament.
