Gradual increase in rainfall predicted for next two to three days – Hydromet Service

Georgetown, GINA, June 6, 2009
The Hydrometerological Office has issued an advisory that the current level of overcast conditions and rainfall amounts are projected to continue for the next 8 to 24 hours which will persist mainly over the coast of Guyana.

The Hydromet Office estimated that within the next two to three days it is possible that Guyana may see a gradual increase in rainfall amounts, and should have about 10-15 days of near normal to normal rains in June.

Forecast conditions should remain favourable for rains through mid June and not as favourable during the last seven days of June.

Georgetown, Timehri, Ogle, Foulis and D’Edward Village have recorded 73.4mm, 14.2mm, 62.7mm 10.0mm and 9.0 mm respectively in seven hours between 8:00 h and 14:00 h today.

The present instability is influenced by the presence of a very potent tropical wave over the Guianas. The system was generally very active along Regions 1, 2, 3 4, 5, 6 and 10, the Hydromet Office said.

All the drainage sluices will be opened at approximately 18:30 h and gravity drainage will be possible until the next high tide.

The Ministry of Agriculture has noted that all sluices are functional and pumps are in operation. Its hotline numbers are 227 -5049 and 225 – 8310.
