In larceny cases…
ONE of two convicted thieves was jailed, another fined and two larceny defendants were granted bail yesterday, by Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson.
The prisoner, Grahal Fiedkou, 19, of Lot 191 Lance Gibbs Street, Queenstown, pleaded guilty to stealing an ‘L7’ cellular phone, valued $45,000, from Kenton De Jonge, last May 31.
Police Corporal Munnilall Seetaram, prosecuting, said the instrument was recovered on Fiedkou’s person.
Attorney-at-law Mr. Glen Hanoman, who appeared for the convict as a friend of the Court, asked the magistrate to show leniency, lamenting that young people today have a weakness for cellular phones.
But Fiedkou was sentenced to one year imprisonment.
The other convicted thief, Michael Ramdeholl, 31, of Lot 226 South Road, admitted that he stole drink bottles, priced at $8,000, property of Cheryl Haynes, on May 31.
Ramdeholl said he did not steal the bottles but was maintaining his guilty plea because he wanted the matter to be concluded yesterday.
He was ordered to pay a $20,000 fine with the alternative of six months imprisonment.
One of the other defendants, Peter Henry, 47, of Lot 163 Charlotte Street, denied that, on June 1, in Wellington Street, also in Georgetown, he stole a bag containing documents, 24 hats and other articles, all worth $65,000, belonging to Winslow McKenzie.
Henry was allowed $25,000 bail until June 19.
Naresh Mohabir, 36, of Lot 523 Herstelling, East Bank Demerara, also pleaded not guilty to theft.
Particulars of his charge alleged that, on June 2, he stole one ‘V6’ cellular phone, worth $60,000, property of Sheila Singh.
He was ordered to post $30,000 surety and return to Court on June 22.
